Ajahn Dhiravamsa Memorial – July 28, 2023

Ajahn Dhiravamsa Memorial – July 28, 2023

I would like to invite you to spend an afternoon among Dharma friends to remember and honor Master Dhiravamsa. It will take place this coming Friday, July 28, 2023, marking two years since his physical absence.

The idea is to organize a relaxed gathering at Hotel Mas Lazuli, to enjoy each other’s company with some food and drinks in a beautiful and peaceful setting—just as Dhira also liked to enjoy life, without attachment. As he used to say: “We are consumers of pleasure; even so, it must be done with awareness, so as not to become attached. Enjoy them and let them go.”

Reception will begin at 12:30 pm with an aperitif. From 1:30 pm onwards, a sharing-style menu will be served. We can relax and enjoy our time together for as long as we wish.

I hope to see again those who joined last year, and also those who were not able to come. This year there will be no formal ceremony, only a coming together from love and essence—connecting from our hearts with all who are present and those who are not. As Dhira said: “Even when we are not together, we are always connected.”

Sending warm wishes to everyone, with unlimited Mettā,
Janine Jutima

July 2022: Return of Master Dhiravamsa’s Ashes to Thailand

July 2022: Return of Master Dhiravamsa’s Ashes to Thailand

In July 2022, the journey began to return Master Dhiravamsa’s ashes from Spain to his hometown of Yasothon, Thailand. To bless this journey and to express gratitude for Master Dhiravamsa’s lifelong dedication, three gatherings were organized so that his students, friends, and loved ones could come together to honor him.

The journey began in La Palma (Canary Islands), the Master’s last place of residence, and continued to Gran Canaria, where he lived and taught the Dharma and meditation for many years. The first gathering was held there on July 23, 2022.

We then met in Catalonia on July 28, 2022 (marking one year since his passing), in the Pyrenees mountains, near the first place to which Dhiravamsa was invited when he came to Spain more than thirty years ago.

Finally, the last ceremony took place in Master Dhiravamsa’s hometown of Yasothon (Thailand) on August 7, 2022. His family has built a stupa where his ashes will rest, in accordance with Thai tradition and the wishes of the family.

November 2021 – Mettā Meditations – Birthday of Master Dhiravamsa

November 2021 – Mettā Meditations – Birthday of Master Dhiravamsa

  • Thursday, October 28, 2021: Energetic Birthday
  • Friday, November 5, 2021: Biological Birthday (100 days)
  • Saturday, November 6, 13, 20 and 27, 2021

Next Thursday, October 28, 2021, we will celebrate the energetic birthday of Master Dhiravamsa with a Mettā meditation via Zoom. In his autobiography, Union of Opposites, he explains why this day was so important to him: it was the day on which he experienced an energetic healing that restored his energy body, making him feel 23 years younger.

On Friday, November 5, 2021, we will hold another Mettā meditation to celebrate what would have been the biological birthday of Master Dhiravamsa, who was born 87 years earlier, in 1934.

Throughout the month of November, on every Saturday (6, 13, 20 and 27), we will also gather both in the morning and in the afternoon. Dhiravamsa was born on a Saturday and considered all Saturdays of the year to be the days when the energy was most favorable for him. He also used to celebrate the entire month of November as the month of his birth. For this reason, I feel that these meaningful dates are a good opportunity for us to come together and meditate as a group.

I propose that the focus of all our meditations throughout November be Mettā (universal and unconditional love, and all good wishes). You may join the group through the Zoom link, whether for a single day or for all the sessions. If the proposed schedule does not suit you, you may also meditate on your own, connecting at the level of energy and awareness with the whole group.

With good wishes to all, may all the benefits of our practice be for all sentient beings, especially for our beloved Master Dhiravamsa.

La Palma Volcano, farewell to Ajahn Dhiravamsa's meditation centre in the Canaries

La Palma Volcano, farewell to Ajahn Dhiravamsa's meditation centre in the Canaries

On Friday 15th October 2021, one of the lava flows of the volcano of La Palma has engulfed the estate (La Palma Magica) where Dhiravamsa had in recent years located what was to become his meditation centre in the Canary Islands. After Dhiravamsa's death, a sanctuary was to be located there, to which everyone could have access and honour the memory of the master. The universe and nature have decided that these plans will not be realised. With all my love, Mettâ and Karunâ, for the owners of the finca Esteban and Liliana and all the inhabitants of La Palma May the universe welcome and protect them.

Farewell Ceremony with Tew Bunnag

Farewell Ceremony with Tew Bunnag

Let this sharing serve as a final tribute to Dhiravamsa and to honour his wise and loving teachings so that we may continue to extend unlimited Metta for the benefit of his soul, as well as for ourselves, for all beings and for the generous planet Earth that welcomes us in our journey. A big hug to all with infinite Mettâ from, Guillermo Leyva, Janine Jutima and Carmen Casamitjana.

We will celebrate a small intimate ceremony for Dhiravamsa on Saturday morning 07/31/2021 at 8:45h. I explain the ceremony. We start with: Namo Tassa Bhagavato arahato samma sambuddhassa and Buddham saranam gacchami. At 9:20 am the ritual consists of burning pieces of paper with the candle and putting the remains in the bowl of water. During this time we chant: Gate gate pāragate pārasaṃgate bodhi svāha (Go, go, go beyond, beyond the beyond, to the shore of enlightenment). If you want to participate, you can have a flower, a candle, a bowl of water, matches, a piece of paper and a pen. This is the ceremony that Dhiravamsa taught me (Tew Bunnag).

Ajahn Dhiravamsa takes his last breath to enter parinibbhana

Ajahn Dhiravamsa takes his last breath to enter parinibbhana

On 28 July 2021, at the age of 86 and after a life dedicated to the dharma and all sentient beings, Ajahn Dhiravamsa took his last breath in full consciousness and in his own words was calm, quiet and clear, ready to let go of all aggregates. Ajahn Dhiravamsa left this plane of existence giving a great example of love and wisdom.

With boundless love and Metta he was accompanied by hundreds of his students, disciples, friends and relatives from all parts of the earth in meditation and in their hearts. May his teachings, understandings and love continue to flow in all our hearts to walk this wonderful path that the Buddha discovered and that Dhiravamsa has shown us and that he himself has lived every second of his life until his death, and thus honour his legacy. May we all attain liberation.
